We’ve planned an exciting line up of special programs related to our One Book selection, Manhunt. All programs are free and will take place at the Library.

Lincoln-Douglas Debates Exhibit

This traveling exhibit, provided by The Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition on behalf of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Communities, dramatically and colorfully illustrates all aspects of the debates. See page 12 for more details.

One Book, One Reading Community Opening Events

Join us as we celebrate all things Lincoln during our One Book, One Reading Community kick-off event. Weather permitting, all activities will take place outside. Festivities will be moved indoors, if there is inclement weather. Fun for the whole family. All ages are invited to attend. Civil War Nurse: Louisa May Alcott

Before she rose to international celebrity with the publication of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott published Hospital Sketches, an engaging portrait of her work as a nurse for wounded soldiers during the winter of 1862-63. Actress Leslie Goddard portrays Alcott and gives striking insight into the women who transformed the all-male profession of nursing during the Civil War.

Abraham Lincoln in Song

Nationally-acclaimed folk singer and songwriter Chris Vallillo performs his one man show on history’s most beloved figure. Hear historic narratives, contemporary folk music and period folksongs. All ages are invited to attend.

Actors Michael Krebs and Larry Diemer portray Lincoln and Stephen Douglas and reenact portions of this dramatic fifth debate, which took place October 7, 1858.

The Roads that Lead to Lincoln

Chicagoan David Clark traces the major events of Lincoln’s life from his arrival in Illinois in 1830 until he left for Washington as President-elect in 1861. Through slides and music, we’ll learn about Lincoln and take a virtual tour along Route 66, the 8th Judicial Circuit, the Great River Road and the Lincoln Highway in search of sites related to his life. Lincoln and Liberty

Musicians Loose Change and Friends will entertain with music and songs from Lincoln’s era, the Westward Expansion and the Civil War. This “different kind of string band” will perform rhythms on the guitar, banjo, autoharp, fiddle and more. Also, hear historic notes of Lincoln’s life and times. Images of Honest Abe

Art historian Jeff Mishur presents this slide lecture examining a variety of depictions of our 16th President. See images of Lincoln and discover how they changed during the course of his political career. Sponsored by the Friends of Ela Library, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The Camera and Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the first American president to recognize the publicity value of photography, and he successfully used the media to help secure his election. Mark Pohlad, an associate professor of art history at DePaul University, will trace images of Lincoln and his circle while describing the nature and challenges of photography in the mid-19th century.

The Hidden Codes of Pre-Civil War Quilts

Dr. Clarice Boswell, author of Lizzie’s Story: A Slave Family’s Journey to Freedom, will share the journey of her own family. Dr. Boswell illuminates the history and stories of quilts in the Underground Railroad as taught to her by her own grandmother, a former slave. Several quilts will be on hand for display. Her books will be available for purchase and signing.
