Circulation Assistant I

Responsibilities include:

  • providing courteous and professional customer service to patrons and staff in person and on the phone
  • performing duties of checking in and out library materials including Interlibrary loans
  • assisting patrons with self checkouts, feeding all book drop items through the sorter, and emptying bins and putting items on appropriate carts
  • checking for missing or damaged items
  • maintaining the drive-up holds shelf and processing all in-house and CCS holds for distribution and circulation including pick-list holds
  • preparing and returning all items from other libraries for daily pick-up
  • registering and issuing library cards using District and Lake County Tax Assessor maps and records
  • maintaining patron records keeping all information private and up-to date
  • collecting fines for overdue materials
  • verifying price and collecting payment for lost or damaged items
  • accurately collecting fines and making change for patrons
  • monitoring and answering Circulation questions that come over WebChat
  • identifying and sending damaged items to Technical Services for repair or discard

Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalency, previous work experience, computer experience desirable. Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus.

Knowledge and Skills:
Ability to:

  • take personal responsibility for making sure customer needs are met
  • work cooperatively on a team
  • work long periods at the circulation counter, using a computer terminal and keyboard
  • bend, reach, and lift
  • push or pull a cart loaded with library materials
  • read small print accurately
  • perform accurate math calculations
  • retrieve items from various locations in the department and library

Position Hours:
12 hours per week: Monday: 1:00pm-5:00pm, Thursday 1:00pm-5:00pm, and one weekend per month.

Pay: $12.42 per hour

Virtual Services Specialist

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a collaborative, dedicated individual to join the organization as the Virtual Services Specialist. (Posted 10/1/19).

We are looking for someone who readily embraces innovation and excellence in virtual services, and will help us find ways to address our community’s emerging needs. This position is full-time and reports to the IT Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs and develops web pages, forms, and other content for staff and public use, either by utilizing personal expertise or in cooperation with third-party website development contractors.
  • Directly edits and maintains website, apps, intranet content, and related components on a regular basis.
  • Troubleshoots patrons' reported problems in accessing Library website content.
  • Works with the Library’s digital e-resources and social networking teams to ensure all areas of the website support the Library’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Utilizes current web analytics tools and other methods to assess usage of the library’s website, 
  • linked research and educational databases, and e-collections.
  • Attends appropriate training opportunities; participates as a member of library-wide committees.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field; MLS preferred. Two years of experience with website management.

Salary:  $22.42 - $28.02 per hour depending on qualifications and experience. Full benefits including participation in IMRF. Night and weekend availability.

Bilingual Information Desk and Passport Assistant

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, and self-motivated bilingual applicant with exceptional customer service skills and proficiency in speaking both Spanish and English. Our Library strives to be a welcoming center for our community and this position is responsible for creating a positive library experience at an extremely busy Information Desk. Responsibilities include general reference, passport services, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance. This is a 4-12 hour per week position with a work schedule that requires evening and Saturday hours, with occasional daytime hours.

Information Desk Assistant Responsibilities

  • Answer general inquiries and provide reader’s advisory service in Spanish and English.
  • Greet and assist patrons, provide informational and directional assistance in person and via phone.
  • Translate Library information in print and digital media.
  • Cross-train in other departments to provide translation assistance.
  • Assist patrons with retrieving equipment from the Forge.
  • Take program sign-ups and accept payments for the meeting room.
  • Assist patrons with the use of the copier/scanner and perform troubleshooting.
  • Take voter registrations, if eligible.
  • Answer questions about using technology including library apps, mobile devices, the internet, and word processing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Passport Agent Responsibilities

  • Meet State Department Requirements for certified Passport Agents:

-Must be a United States citizen.
-Must be 18 years of age or older.
-Not presently under probation, parole, indictment or convicted of any Federal, State, Local felony or misdemeanor conviction including moral turpitude or breach of trust, (embezzlement, fraud, drug offense or dishonesty involving public trust)
-Must pass Passport Application Acceptance Agent training upon hire. Training will be provided online. Recertification is done annually.

  • Process passport applications as a certified Passport Agent.
  • Assist patrons with passport questions in person and on the phone.
  • Add patrons to the waiting list for passport processing.
  • Greet and assist patrons by providing information, directional assistance, and referrals to appropriate staff.

Requirements: 2 years of college preferred, one year of work experience with public interaction and customer service experience required. Library experience a plus. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Must be 18 years or older to meet State Department requirements.

Knowledge and Skills

Ability to:

  • Deal with multiple tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Interact with patrons courteously, skillfully and accurately
  • Work effectively with co-workers in a collaborative, team-based organization
  • Learn use of telephone system and maintain standards of phone service
  • Comfortably use and explain how to use technology
  • Push and pull a cart weighing up to 200 pounds
  • Bend, lift, and carry objects up to 40 pounds

Position Hours: 4-12 hours per week. Schedule includes evening and weekend shifts, with occasional daytime hours.

Pay: $16.69 per hour
