How You’ll Serve Our Organization

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Library Director will serve as a visionary leader, an advocate for the library and champion for the community and the library. 

  • Oversee the strategic planning for the District while formulating the goals and objectives to meet the needs of the community and recommending library policy to the Board of Trustees.
  • Evaluate and actively promote library programs and services along with the Board, staff and community.
  • Lead the staff and the library in a highly professional manner, continuing to foster teamwork, collaboration and trust. Responsible for recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of library staff.
  • Ensure library compliance with federal, state and local laws. Manage the tax levy process, formulate and manage the library budget in conjunction with the Board and prepare required reports.
  • Advocate for and represent the library at public events and foster formal and informal relationships with local government agencies and community organizations.
  • Serve as a visionary, communicative and innovative leader responding to the needs of the community and adapting to the evolving role of public libraries.
  • Acts as the primary liaison with the Board of Trustees for all strategic and financial management decisions and keeps the board apprised of events, trends and issues affecting the library and the community.
  • In conjunction with the Board, responsible for the development and implementation of the public relations programs.
  • Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the physical facility including projecting long term improvements.
  • Works closely with technology projects to help prioritize the implementation of new technologies and chairs monthly Department Head meetings.

What We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university or equivalent professional degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible public library management experience, preferably 4 years as an Executive Director or Assistant Director.
  • Thorough knowledge of current and trending policies and practices of public library functions.
  • Financial expertise in planning and implementing library budgeting and levying processes.
  • Provide decisive leadership and thoughtful coaching and guidance to staff.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral and the ability to speak effectively to groups.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Board of Trustees, the staff, and public.  Interact courteously and diplomatically with the public.
  • Evaluate information and exercise appropriate judgment in establishing and managing priorities and resolving complex matters.
  • Exhibit integrity and a personal commitment to high professional, ethical and service standards and support EAPL’s mission and demonstrate a commitment to the Library’s core values.
  • Maintain FOIA and Open Meetings Act (OMA) annual certification.
  • Flexibility to work daytime, evening, and weekend hours as needed.

Adult Reference Librarian/Technology Specialist

Information Desk Assistant

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, and self-motivated applicant with exceptional customer service skills. Our Library strives to be a welcoming center for our community and this position is responsible for creating a positive customer experience at an extremely busy information desk. Responsibilities include general reference, passport services, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance. This is a 12-18 hour per week position with a work schedule that requires daytime, evening, and rotating weekend hours. (Posted 2/25/20).

Responsibilities:

  • Provides general reference and reader’s advisory service.
  • Uses the Library’s catalog to locate items and place holds.
  • Greets and assists patrons, provides informational and directional assistance in person and via phone.
  • Processes passport applications as a certified Passport Agent.
  • Assists patrons with retrieving equipment from the Forge.
  • Takes program sign-ups, accepting payment where required, giving receipts and handling cancellations.
  • Takes applications and accepts payments for the meeting room.
  • Assists patrons with the use of the copier/scanner and performs troubleshooting.
  • Takes voter registrations, if eligible.
  • Attends staff meetings, staff training days, and department meetings.
  • Answers questions about using technology including library apps, mobile devices, the internet, and word processing.
  • Fills in for absent coworkers.

Requirements:
2 years of college, one year of work experience with public interaction and customer service experience required. Library experience preferred. Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus. Must meet State Department requirements for certified passport agents.

Knowledge and Skills:
Must have the ability to:

  • Deal with multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Interact with patrons courteously, skillfully and accurately.
  • Work effectively with co-workers in a collaborative, team-based organization.
  • Learn use of telephone system and maintain standards of phone service.
  • Comfortably use and explain how to use technology.
  • Read small print; push and pull a cart loaded with materials; bend, lift, and reach.

Position Hours: 12-18 hours per week, flexible availability needed. Schedule includes daytime, evening, and weekend shifts. Schedule subject to change from week to week.

Pay: $16.69/hr

Part-Time Reference Librarian

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL is looking for a Part-Time Reference Librarian to join our forward-thinking Adult Reference Department. The Adult Reference desk provides non-fiction reference and readers’ advisory services and technology assistance. The desk is also responsible for the Library’s Digital Media Labs and VR headsets, and circulates the Library’s GoPro HERO cameras and Wi-Fi hotspots. (Posted 2/3/20).

The Part-Time Reference Librarian will provide reference service at a busy reference desk, utilizing a large array of print reference resources, online databases, and the Internet. The position will also be required to perform basic computer troubleshooting and assistance with copiers, printers, MS Office, and the Internet.

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to excellent public service and be comfortable with a variety of reference resources and technologies.

Requirements

  • MLS from ALA-Accredited Institution. Current MLS students are also welcome to apply.
  • Knowledge of basic reference resources and practices, including online sources and searching.
  • Knowledge of technology applications relative to public library reference services.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus.

Salary:  $19.34 per hour

Children's Arts and Technology Librarian

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a collaborative, kind, and dedicated librarian who enjoys working with children and their families.  In particular, the Arts and Technology Librarian will develop and present programs focused on making, creating, and experimenting in the Children’s Department as well as in the Library’s makerspace, Forge. Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs reference and readers’ advisory at the Children’s Reference Desk
  • Develops and presents programs for children and families, especially those related to science, technology, and the arts
  • Manages the STEM kits collection and participates in other collection development work
  • Prepares crafts/activities for the activity table
  • Stays up-to-date on technology trends and opportunities related to children’s services in public libraries and shares these with library staff
  • Creates social media content related to children’s services

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with coursework in children’s services
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in maker or other technologies
  • Experience working with children, parents, and caregivers
  • Ability to work easily and naturally as a member of a close-knit team
  • Reliable, with excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work independently at a professional level
  • Avid reader of children’s literature
  • A sense of curiosity
  • Ability to perform simple troubleshooting and use Apple & Microsoft products including computers and iPads
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, familiarity using an ILS, and ability to learn other software and cloud-based applications as related to the position
  • Ability to approach and defuse difficult patron situations
  • Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language ability a plus

Position Hours: 37.5 per week, including rotating weekends and evenings.

Salary: $22.42 per hour with full benefits, including 4 weeks of vacation and participation in IMRF.
