Part-Time Security Monitor

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking an energetic individual to serve as a part-time Security Monitor. This position is responsible for helping to maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all library visitors. Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Makes routine inspections of the interior building and exterior grounds to maintain the safety and security of all library patrons, property, and staff.
  • Continually observes activity in the library and on library property to maintain an appropriate environment consistent with the library’s policies. Completes Incident Reports as needed.
  • Follows established procedures and assists with vacating, closing, and securing the building.

Ability to:

  • Provide excellent customer service and hospitality
  • Communicate positively, clearly & effectively with all age groups
  • Work independently
  • Anticipate potential disruptive behavior and take preventative action
  • Maintain composure under stress
  • Interpret Library policies & procedures to the public

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least two years working with the public where problem solving was required
  • Basic computer skills
  • Previous experience working in a library environment preferred
  • Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus

Position Hours: 13 hours per week. Monday 4:00pm-9:00pm, Tuesday 4:00pm-9:00pm, and Friday 3:00pm-6:00pm. Ability to stay beyond closing hours if necessary.

Salary: $14.19 per hour, depending on qualifications

Bilingual Information Desk and Passport Assistant

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, and self-motivated bilingual applicant with exceptional customer service skills and proficiency in speaking both Spanish and English. Our Library strives to be a welcoming center for our community and this position is responsible for creating a positive library experience at an extremely busy Information Desk. Responsibilities include general reference, passport services, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance. This is an 8-15 hour per week position with a work schedule that requires evening and Saturday hours, with occasional daytime hours. (Posted 8/27/18)

Information Desk Assistant Responsibilities

  • Answer general inquiries and provide reader’s advisory service in Spanish and English.
  • Greet and assist patrons, provide informational and directional assistance in person and via phone.
  • Translate Library information in print and digital media.
  • Cross-train in other departments to provide translation assistance.
  • Assist patrons with retrieving equipment from the Forge.
  • Take program sign-ups and accept payments for the meeting room.
  • Assist patrons with the use of the copier/scanner and perform troubleshooting.
  • Take voter registrations, if eligible.
  • Answer questions about using technology including library apps, mobile devices, the internet, and word processing.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Passport Agent Responsibilities

  • Meet State Department Requirements for certified Passport Agents: Must be 18 years of age or older. Not presently under probation, parole, indictment or convicted of any Federal, State, Local felony or misdemeanor conviction including moral turpitude or breach of trust, (embezzlement, fraud, drug offense or dishonesty involving public trust). Passport Application Acceptance Agents must be a United States citizen or U.S. National and approved by the Department of State.
  • Must pass Passport Application Acceptance Agent training upon hire. Training will be provided online. Recertification is done annually.
  • Process passport applications as a certified Passport Agent.
  • Assist patrons with passport questions in person and on the phone.
  • Add patrons to the waiting list for passport processing.
  • Greet and assist patrons by providing information, directional assistance, and referrals to appropriate staff.

Requirements: 2 years of college preferred, one year of work experience with public interaction and customer service experience required. Library experience a plus. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Must be 18 years or older to meet State Department requirements.

Knowledge and Skills

Ability to:

  • Deal with multiple tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Interact with patrons courteously, skillfully and accurately
  • Work effectively with co-workers in a collaborative, team-based organization
  • Learn use of telephone system and maintain standards of phone service
  • Comfortably use and explain how to use technology
  • Push and pull a cart weighing up to 200 pounds
  • Bend, lift, and carry objects up to 40 pounds

Position Hours: 8-15 hours per week. Schedule includes evening and weekend shifts, with occasional daytime hours.

Pay: $16.44 per hour

Event and Makerspace Programmer

The Ela Area Public Library seeks an energetic, creative Event and Makerspace Programmer to lead and enhance public services and community engagement. (Posted 8/7/18)

The Ela Area Public Library is a progressive and customer service focused library located in the community of Lake Zurich, in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. The makerspace is an open, shared space for all ages, and is located adjacent to the Library’s teen space. It includes a 3D printer, Silhouette Cameo, craft supplies, sewing machines, Raspberry Pi kits and more.

Responsibilities include:

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates library programs for adults and families under the direction of the Public Information Coordinator.
  • Develops, teaches, and promotes innovative technology and maker programs both in the library and in the community.
  • Participates as a member of library-wide committees, including the social media team, Forge, and programming committee.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Candidates must be self-starting and capable of working autonomously on assigned projects with excellent time management skills. 

Ability to:

  • Assess community needs and interests for programming and events
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with appropriate community contacts, program providers, and programming organizations
  • Stay current with evolving technologies and training techniques for adults and teens
  • Teach hands on activities in a variety of settings and formats
  • Work collaboratively with Library staff

Requirements: Bachelors Degree required. MLS preferred.  Previous programming experience required, preferably in a public library setting. Proficiency with Mac and PC operating systems required.  Strong community involvement and local contacts are highly desirable.

Position Hours: 20 hours per week. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Starting Salary: $19.06 per hour. Benefits include vacation, sick and personal time and participation in our IMRF Retirement Program.

The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL has an opening for a Children’s Department Page. Responsibilities include sorting, shelving, and straightening all types of children’s materials.
