Reference Librarian/Business Specialist 

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a collaborative, tech-focused librarian to join the Reference Department as a Business Specialist. This position reports to the Department Head of Reference and provides support and outreach to the business community, entrepreneurs and job seekers. Significant duties include:

  • Actively promotes knowledge and awareness of the Library and relevant materials and services through programs, outreach, and displays.
  • Develops, plans and executes programs on business, career, and personal finance-related topics regularly.
  • Maintains a virtual presence through contributions to the Library’s website and social media.
  • Represents the Library as a liaison to the local business community and business-related organizations. 
  • Provides one-on-one assistance appointments and in-depth research services for business and career-related topics.
  • Has primary responsibility for collecting library materials in business, finance, career, and other designated areas.

Requirements: MLS from ALA accredited institution. One year, recent professional public library experience; demonstrated abilities of service to the public; commitment to superior customer service and communication. Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus.

Salary: $22.42 per hour ($43,714 annually) with full benefits, including 4 weeks of vacation and participation in IMRF. Night and weekend availability.

Teen Librarian

Ela Area Public Library District

Due to internal promotion, the Ela Area Public Library District is seeking a collaborative and passionate individual to join the Popular Materials team as the Teen Librarian. The ideal candidate is passionate about trending books and media, technology, and creating a safe and supportive environment for teens in our community. The Teen Librarian creates and hosts programs in our makerspace, provides school outreach, and works collaboratively with other departments on library-wide initiatives. We are seeking a librarian who enjoys learning new technology and sharing the joy of discovery with our teens. (posted 12/30/19).

The Teen Librarian performs library services in conjunction with collection selection and maintenance, as well as readers advisory, and technology assistance within the Popular Materials department. Knowledge of current popular adult and teen fiction and media is required. This position is full time and reports to the Head of Popular Materials.

Children's Arts and Technology Librarian

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a collaborative, kind, and dedicated librarian who enjoys working with children and their families.  In particular, the Arts and Technology Librarian will develop and present programs focused on making, creating, and experimenting in the Children’s Department as well as in the Library’s makerspace, Forge. Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs reference and readers’ advisory at the Children’s Reference Desk
  • Develops and presents programs for children and families, especially those related to science, technology, and the arts
  • Manages the STEM kits collection and participates in other collection development work
  • Prepares crafts/activities for the activity table
  • Stays up-to-date on technology trends and opportunities related to children’s services in public libraries and shares these with library staff
  • Creates social media content related to children’s services

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with coursework in children’s services
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in maker or other technologies
  • Experience working with children, parents, and caregivers
  • Ability to work easily and naturally as a member of a close-knit team
  • Reliable, with excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work independently at a professional level
  • Avid reader of children’s literature
  • A sense of curiosity
  • Ability to perform simple troubleshooting and use Apple & Microsoft products including computers and iPads

Position Hours: 37.5 per week, including rotating weekends and evenings.

Bilingual Information Desk and Passport Assistant

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, and self-motivated bilingual applicant with exceptional customer service skills and proficiency in speaking both Spanish and English. Our Library strives to be a welcoming center for our community and this position is responsible for creating a positive library experience at an extremely busy Information Desk. Responsibilities include general reference, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance. This is a 4-12 hour per week position with a work schedule that requires evening and Saturday hours. Responsibilities

  • Answer general inquiries and provide reader’s advisory service in Spanish and English.
  • Greet and assist patrons, provide informational and directional assistance in person and via phone.
  • Translate Library information in print and digital media.
  • Cross-train in other departments to provide translation assistance.
  • Assist patrons with retrieving equipment from the Forge.
  • Take program sign-ups and accept payments for the meeting room.
  • Assist patrons with the use of the copier/scanner and perform troubleshooting.
  • Take voter registrations, if eligible.
  • Answer questions about using technology including library apps, mobile devices, the internet, and word processing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements: 2 years of college preferred, one year of work experience with public interaction and customer service experience required. Library experience a plus. Bilingual in Spanish and English.
