Makerspace & Technology Services Specialist

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a creative, enthusiastic employee with a passion for crafting and maker technologies to join our Digital Services team and inspire inventive projects in our library’s makerspace, Forge. The makerspace is an open, shared space for all ages located in the heart of our library. It includes 3D printers, Silhouette CAMEO and Cricut Cutting Machines, sewing machines, Arduinos, and more.

In this role you will assist patrons with maker projects and provide excellent customer service to people of all ages. You will develop and lead unique, innovative programs that instruct and inspire patrons’ creativity to use tools and equipment in the space. And you will help to run many day-to-day operations of the makerspace, including leading maintenance and troubleshooting of maker equipment and tools, creation of training documentation, and inventory management. Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide excellent customer service to library patrons of all ages.
  • Assist patrons with creative projects, especially those using maker tools and equipment such as 3D printers, a laser cutter, sewing machines, vinyl/paper cutting machines, and craft tools.
  • Develop and lead diverse, innovative programs, with a focus on instruction using makerspace equipment and tools.
  • Provide individual and group instruction, including creation and maintenance of training documentation.
  • Troubleshoot makerspace equipment as needed and perform routine maintenance on technology in the space.
  • Manage makerspace inventory and supplies.
  • Keep informed of current information, upgrades, and trends. Share new ideas for the space and participate in professional development activities relating to areas of responsibility.

Knowledge and skills:

Strong people skills coupled with a commitment to providing excellent customer service to patrons and staff. Excellent technology troubleshooting skills and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong knowledge in Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS operating systems and software.
  • Basic knowledge of design/editing software including Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Knowledge of maker equipment and software, such as 3D printers, sewing machines, laser cutters, vinyl cutting, etc.
  • Strong public presentation and instructional skills.
  • Speaking skills in other languages, particularly Spanish or Polish, is a plus.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate flexibility to work various shifts to accommodate the needs of the position, including evenings and weekends.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and patrons, both orally and in writing.
  • Bend, reach and lift objects up to 20 pounds.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree preferred. 2 years of experience in customer service or STEAM-related fields, or a combination of education and experience. Library experience a plus. Familiarity and experience with makerspace technology and tools. Experience troubleshooting software and hardware. Experience in developing and facilitating age-appropriate instructional programs.                                                                                                                             

Position Hours: 37.5 per week, including weekends and evenings

Salary: Starting at $20.31 per hour with full benefits, including  health, dental & vision insurance, 4 weeks vacation plus sick and personal leave, Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension plan and availability of 457/Roth savings plan.

Childrens Librarian

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a collaborative librarian to join our team. The librarian in this position develops and presents programs related to technology and the arts in the Children’s Department as well as in the library’s makerspace, Forge. (Posted 3/14/21).

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs reference and readers’ advisory at the Children’s Reference Desk
  • Develops and presents programs for children and families in a variety of formats
  • Manages the Curiosity Kit collection and participates in other collection development work
  • Prepares crafts/activities for the activity table
  • Stays up-to-date on technology trends and opportunities related to children’s services in public libraries and shares these with library staff
  • Creates social media content related to children’s services

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with coursework in children’s services
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in arts and crafts, maker projects, or other fun technology for children
  • Experience working with children, parents, and caregivers
  • Ability to work easily and naturally as a member of a close-knit team

Position Hours: 37.5 per week, including rotating weekends and evenings

Salary: $45,900 annually with full benefits, including 4 weeks of vacation and participation in IMRF.

Information Desk Assistant

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, and self-motivated applicant with exceptional customer service skills. Our library strives to be a welcoming center for our community and this position is responsible for creating a positive library experience at an extremely busy information desk. Responsibilities include general reference, passport services, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance. This is a 12-18 hour per week position with a work schedule that requires daytime, evening, and weekend hours. During COVID, hours will be limited but will expand when we return to normal operating hours. (Posted 3/5/21).

Responsibilities:

  • Provides general reference and reader’s advisory service.
  • Greets and assists patrons, provides informational and directional assistance in person and via phone.
  • Processes passport applications as a certified Passport Agent.
  • Assists patrons with program registration and cancellation.
  • Assists patrons with retrieving equipment from the Forge.
  • Takes applications and accepts payments for the meeting room.
  • Assists patrons with the use of the copier/scanner and performs troubleshooting.
  • Takes voter registrations, if eligible.
  • Attends staff meetings, staff training days, and department meetings.
  • Answers questions about using technology including library apps, mobile devices, the internet, and word processing.
  • Fills in for absent coworkers.

Requirements:
2 years of college, one year of work experience with public interaction and customer service experience required. Library experience preferred. Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus.

Part-Time Reference Librarian

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL is looking for a Part-Time Reference Librarian to join our forward-thinking Adult Reference Department. The Adult Reference desk provides non-fiction reference and readers’ advisory services and technology assistance. The desk is also responsible for the Library’s Digital Media Labs and VR headsets. The Part-Time Reference Librarian will provide reference service at a busy reference desk, utilizing a large array of print reference resources, online databases, and the Internet. The position will also be required to perform basic computer troubleshooting and assistance with copiers, printers, MS Office, and the Internet.

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to excellent public service and be comfortable with a variety of reference resources and technologies.

Requirements

  • MLS from ALA-Accredited Institution. Current MLS students are also welcome to apply.
  • Knowledge of basic reference resources and practices, including online sources and searching.
  • Knowledge of technology applications relative to public library reference services.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Part-Time Security Monitor

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking an energetic individual to serve as a part-time Security Monitor. This position is responsible for helping to maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all library visitors. The ability to work as part of a team with a positive attitude even when dealing with problems is highly desired. (Posted 8/26/20).

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Makes routine inspections of the interior building and exterior grounds to maintain the safety and security of all library patrons, property, and staff.
  • Continually observes activity in the library and on library property to maintain an appropriate environment consistent with the library’s policies. Completes Incident Reports as needed.
  • Follows established procedures and assists with vacating, closing, and securing the building.

Ability to:

  • Provide excellent customer service and hospitality
  • Communicate positively, clearly & effectively with all age groups

Position Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Friday 3:00pm- 6:00pm
                             Alternating weekends Saturday 10:00am-2:00pm, Sunday 12:00pm-5:00pm
                             Ability to stay beyond closing hours if necessary

Salary: $15.12 per hour, depending on qualifications
