Bilingual Information Desk and Passport Assistant

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, and self-motivated bilingual applicant with exceptional customer service skills and proficiency in speaking both Spanish and English. Our Library strives to be a welcoming center for our community and this position is responsible for creating a positive library experience at an extremely busy Information Desk. Responsibilities include general reference, passport services, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance. This is an 8-15 hour per week position with a work schedule that requires evening and Saturday hours, with occasional daytime hours. (Posted 7/26/19).

Information Desk Assistant Responsibilities

  • Answer general inquiries and provide reader’s advisory service in Spanish and English.
  • Greet and assist patrons, provide informational and directional assistance in person and via phone.
  • Translate Library information in print and digital media.
  • Cross-train in other departments to provide translation assistance.
  • Assist patrons with retrieving equipment from the Forge.
  • Take program sign-ups and accept payments for the meeting room.
  • Assist patrons with the use of the copier/scanner and perform troubleshooting.
  • Take voter registrations, if eligible.
  • Answer questions about using technology including library apps, mobile devices, the internet, and word processing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Passport Agent Responsibilities

  • Meet State Department Requirements for certified Passport Agents:
        Must be a United States citizen.
        Must be 18 years of age or older.
        Not presently under probation, parole, indictment or convicted of any Federal, State, Local felony or misdemeanor conviction including moral turpitude or breach of trust, (embezzlement, fraud, drug offense or dishonesty involving public trust).
        Must pass Passport Application Acceptance Agent training upon hire. Training will be provided online. Recertification is done annually.
  • Process passport applications as a certified Passport Agent.
  • Assist patrons with passport questions in person and on the phone.
  • Add patrons to the waiting list for passport processing.
  • Greet and assist patrons by providing information, directional assistance, and referrals to appropriate staff.

Requirements: 2 years of college preferred, one year of work experience with public interaction and customer service experience required. Library experience a plus. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Must be 18 years or older to meet State Department requirements.

Knowledge and Skills
Ability to:

  • Deal with multiple tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Interact with patrons courteously, skillfully and accurately
  • Work effectively with co-workers in a collaborative, team-based organization
  • Learn use of telephone system and maintain standards of phone service
  • Comfortably use and explain how to use technology
  • Push and pull a cart weighing up to 200 pounds
  • Bend, lift, and carry objects up to 40 pounds

Position Hours: 8-15 hours per week. Schedule includes evening and weekend shifts, with occasional daytime hours.

Pay: $16.69 per hour

Children’s Department Page

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL has two openings for a Children’s Department Page. Responsibilities include sorting, shelving, and maintaining the overall appearance and organization of children’s materials. Attention to detail and competence in filing alphabetically and numerically are required. Candidates must be able to bend, reach, and lift, as well as push a cart loaded with books.(Posted 7/25/19).

Position Hours:
Option 1: 6-9 hours per week. Monday, Wednesday, Friday daytime hours.
Option 2: 6-9 hours per week. 2 evenings per week and weekend availability as needed.

Administrative Assistant/Admin Department

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is looking for a dedicated, team oriented Administrative Assistant to support the daily operations and activities of the Administration Department. This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with a high level of professionalism. Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Administrative Assistant performs Library office duties relating to the creation and distribution of monthly and annual reports and assists with the financial and personnel functions of the Administration department. The qualified candidate will be proficient with Microsoft Office applications, complex file management, and available to work one evening per month to attend Board Meetings. (Posted 6/29/19)
