One of the best public libraries in the nation can be found right here in Lake Zurich. Library Journal recently announced Ela Area Public Library in their latest group of America’s five-Star Libraries. The prestigious rating is the nation’s highest honor awarded only to the nation’s best libraries.
“The staff and Board at Ela are proud to receive this prestigious recognition once again, reflecting service provided in 2018,” said Executive Director Lauren Rosenthal. “Providing books, movies, games, plus value-added services to our patrons is what we’re here for and we’re glad to know we continue to excel for you.”
In order to qualify for consideration, libraries must be a public entity, have a service area with a population of at least 1,000 residents, and have a total operating expenditure of at least $10,000. Ela Library received a five-star designation within the $5 million — $9.9 million expenditure category.
This is the 12th consecutive year Ela Area Public Library has received a star distinction from Library Journal, the library field’s leading professional publication. The LJ index evaluates U.S. public libraries on the quantities of services they deliver based on per capita statistics for library visits, number of items borrowed, program attendance, Wi-Fi sessions and public Internet use.
Ela Area Public Library is only one of two libraries in Lake County and one of five libraries in Illinois to receive this distinction based on its operating expeditures. The rating is a remarkable honor for staff, the Library’s Board of Trustees and the community. The recognition is a direct reflection of the community's engagement both physically at the library and through the use of the library's remote services through www.eapl.org.
This year, 5,608 libraries across the country were evaluated, but only 262 received either a three, four or five starred rating. Scores were based on statistics submitted in 2018. For more information about the Library Journal Index, visit https://www.libraryjournal.com/.
