How it Works

  • Sign up! Stop by the Children's Reference Desk, show your Ela Library card and fill out a quick registration form.
  • You will receive a log to keep track of your reading and a sturdy tote bag to carry all of your books.
  • After you complete the program, your child will receive a t-shirt prize and can take a photo with our finisher sign.

When should I start?

We encourage you to begin reading to your child as a baby, or even sooner during pregnancy. Language is soothing and enriching for your child from a very young age.

How long will it take to complete?

1,000 books sounds like a lot! But if you read just one book a day, you will finish in under three years.

What should I read?

Anything you like! The Children’s Librarians would love to make recommendations and would be happy to show you around the department.

Do I have to read 1,000 different books?

Nope! If you read the same book 15 times, count each reading. Repetition is great for babies and toddlers it reinforces memory and sequencing skills and increases vocabulary.

What are the benefits?

The benefits are enormous! You will strengthen your parent- child relationship, stimulate brain development and build language and literacy skills that last a lifetime.

Where can I get more pages for my reading log?

Print more pages, or stop by the Children’s Desk.
